College of Scrutinators
Seen here is a Scrutinator with his syringe of office, the Glister, and wearing protective clothing suitable for scientific experimentation. The typical Scrutinator garb of purple loincloth and suspenders with a pie-shaped head-covering of soft cloth, is not depicted.
The College of Scrutinators are the workaday religious body within the city of Orrery under the doxe (as opposed to other orders with greater prestige but smaller numbers). It is the largest and outermost of the Seven Rings, or religious orders. It is the remit of the Scrutinators to inspect the bodies of citizens for the shadow sign that indicates a failure of the integrity of their biological matter, and incipient descent into demonhood. They proclaim the relative fitness, or unfitness, of each citizen. Those citizens pure and unbruised by heredity, that is, the royal lines, typically go nude to showcase to all their unblemished faultless skin as a sign of their heritage and power and integrity. Fecundation is also the responsibility of the Scrutinators, which they administer with their ceremonial instrument of office, the Glister.
They are an army of petty, bickering Victor Frankensteins each trying to one-up each other in the eyes of the higher orders so they themselves can ascend beyond the rank of Scrutinator. Ostensibly, they would be doing this to bring glory to Orrery and the doxe, but most of them are craven bureaucrats and charlatans.
